2010 Highlights

Worcester County Public Schools is making a positive difference for the children of Worcester County.  The goal of the school system is to ensure that each child achieves, progresses, and succeeds.  Below are a few basic facts which describe Worcester County Public Schools: 

    • The school system has some of the lowest class sizes in Maryland, with middle and high schools averaging a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:22 and elementary schools averaging 1:18.
     
    • Aggregate scores on the 2010 Maryland School Assessments (MSA) -- administered to Grades 3 through 8 -- exceeded all state aggregate standards, with 91.4 percent of students testing proficient or advanced in reading and 90.5 percent testing proficient or advanced in mathematics.
     
    • Out of 24 Maryland school systems, our 2010 MSA scores ranked in the top-five in four of the six grade levels tested in reading:  Grade 3 (second); Grade 6 (fourth); Grade 7 (third); and Grade 8 (third).
     
    • Out of 24 Maryland school systems, our 2010 MSA scores ranked in the top-five in four of the six grade levels tested in math: Grade 3 (first); Grade 4 (third); Grade 7 (second); and Grade 8 (first).
     
    • Maryland is ranked #1 in the nation for providing the best public education system for the second consecutive year.
     
    • All of our schools are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, an accomplishment achieved by few school systems.
     
    • Eight (8) of our 12 eligible schools are Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, the highest concentration of Blue Ribbon Schools in the state. 
       
    • Four (4) of our schools are National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence (Ocean City, Showell, and Snow Hill Elementary Schools and Stephen Decatur Middle School).
     
    • The 2007 Maryland Teacher of the Year teaches for Worcester County Public Schools (Michelle Hammond, Stephen Decatur Middle School).
    • Seven (7) schools received awards for Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS), earning six (6) Gold designations and one (1) Silver.
     
    • Our school system has 26 NBC teachers, with three more pending certification!
    • Ten (10) of our 14 schools are Professional Development Schools (PDS), working with institutions of higher education to help prepare future teachers.
    • 81% of the school system's Operating Budget is spent on instruction and instructional programs.
    • Worcester County Public Schools consistently ranks in the top 5 for dollars spent in the classroom, when compared with all 24 Maryland school systems.
     
    • 81% of the 2010 graduating seniors plan to attend college or specialized training schools.
     
    • The school system has one of the lowest dropout rates in the state and one of the highest on-time graduation rates in the state!
    • The 2010 graduating class was offered over $12.4 million in merit-based scholarships.
     
    • In our annual Parent Survey, 98% of our parents indicate that the school system provides a quality education.
     
    • 98% of parents surveyed in 2009 indicated that our schools are safe and orderly. 
     
    • Snow Hill High School was named a 2010 MCROTC Naval Honor School and was designated as a U.S. News & World Report Silver School for graduating college-ready students.
     
    • Pocomoke Elementary School  was named a 2010 Panasonic National School Leadership Change Award recipient, for moving from an under-achieving school to a top-performing school. 
     
    • Pocomoke High School is home to the 2010 1A Field Hockey State Champions and Stephen Decatur High School is home to the 3A male and female State Champions in the Pole Vault. 
     
    • The school system employs a staff of 1,187 competent and motivated individuals who have high expectations for themselves and others.
    • Pocomoke Middle School is home to the MESA State Championship team for their windmill project, who also finished in Third Place place at the 2010 MESA national competition.
     
    • The student-to-computer ratio is 2.8:1.
     
    • Superintendent Dr. Jon Andes was the Maryland Superintendent of the Year (2001), a National Distinguished Eagle Scout Award recipient (2001), a Maryland Minority Achievement Award recipient (2004), and a Maryland University Leadership Award recipient (2007).
