Pocomoke Elementary School is located in Pocomoke City, Maryland, next to the beautiful Pocomoke River. We serve 400 students in grades PreK through 3. The faculty of our school believes all kids can learn. We focus on instruction and our considerable resources to make that belief a reality. Through grants and the support of volunteers and the local community, we operate many after school academies which enrich the lives of our students. Our Math, Engineering, and Science Academy has won numerous regional competitions and has placed second in the state. For five years in a row, one of our students was named MESA Student of the Year for the State of Maryland. Mrs. Karen McKelvey, a third grade teacher at PES, was named the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for 2005. Also for 2005, PES was named the Junior Achievement School of the Year. In the Spring of 2006, Pocomoke Elementary was recertified as a Green School, for its efforts in helping to improve our environment and for its conservation of energy. In 2008, PES became the Maryland Charter Education School of the Year. In addition, the school received recognition in Summer 2008 for its selection as a Panasonic National School Change recipient.

School Highlights and Awards
Pocomoke Elementary achieved accreditation through the Middle States Association in 2004. Project Intervene, an extended day center of learning housed in two of our local churches, was recognized in October 2002 by the Maryland State Department of Education for its work in helping minorities to excel. In November 2002, PES was recognized for our improvement on MSPAP. Our 2001 MSPAP scores are the highest in the history of the school. PES piloted the first all day kindergarten program in Worcester County during the 2001-2002 school year. This program helped our kindergartners achieve the highest scores in the county on the spring administration of the Gates MacGinitie test of reading. The PreK program at PES has been validated by the State of Maryland. Pocomoke Elementary is the only school in Worcester County with two PreK teachers. We are able to meet the needs of up to 80 three and four year old students each year. For four years in a row, we have been named by the state as a PBIS Exemplar School. In 2008, our school received a superior status.
