Standing out in the county’s performance results were third graders, as 69 percent of the grade level scored at a level four or five in mathematics and 62 percent of the same students also demonstrated college and career readiness in English/Language Arts (ELA). Third grade not only exceeded the state average, but both percentages were higher than any other county in the state.

Worcester County lead all other counties in the state in demonstrating college and career readiness on the following assessments:  Grade 4 ELA with 66 percent; Grade 6 ELA with 60 percent and Grade 8 ELA with 66 percent. In addition, the county’s performance also impressed in the following assessments: ranking second in the state are Grade 7 ELA with 54 percent and Grade 4 mathematics with 58 percent; ranking fourth in the state are Grade 7 mathematics with 37 percent, Grade 8 mathematics with 39 percent, and Algebra I with 51.8 percent.

“Student assessment results across grade levels continue to validate the hard work and dedication of our educators here in Worcester County,” Superintendent of Schools Jerry Wilson said. “I want to applaud our teachers who are continuing to help our students rise to the level of rigor of the material and concepts in the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards (MDCCRS). It is through strong leadership at our schools, the collaborative work of our school teams and the efforts of our students, their families and the support from our community that all contributed to these high levels of achievement. At the same time, we will use these results to improve opportunities for students who are not college and career ready.”

School and district level leadership are closely reviewing yesterday’s PARCC results with our educators as they further identify areas where students need more support.
